It Is the Focal Point Whether You Chose It or Not
Every room organizes itself around something, and in most North Georgia living rooms that something is the fireplace. Furniture points at it, the television usually sits above it, and it is the first surface a guest looks at. When the brick is a dated orange-red or a heavy dark stone, everything else in the room is fighting it, no matter how well the rest of the space is decorated.
Painting or limewashing the brick resolves that in a single day of work. It is one of the very few interior changes that costs a fraction of a renovation and genuinely changes how a room feels rather than just how it looks.
A neutral fireplace stops competing with your furniture and art for attention.
Dark masonry absorbs a surprising amount of the light in a room. Lightening it changes the whole space.
Four Ways to Change a Brick Fireplace
These are not the same finish at different prices. They produce genuinely different looks, and it is worth seeing samples on your own brick before choosing.
Solid Painted Brick
Full, even coverage in one color. The cleanest and most modern of the options, and the most complete departure from the original brick.
Limewash
A mineral finish that soaks in and softens the brick while letting variation show through. Reads as aged and European rather than freshly painted.
German Schmear
Mortar worked across the face of the brick for a heavier, more textured, old-world result. The most rustic of the four.
Mantel and Trim Only
Sometimes the brick is fine and the mantel is the problem. Refinishing the mantel and surround alone can be enough.
Masonry Is Not Drywall and Cannot Be Treated Like It
Brick around a working fireplace carries soot, and soot will bleed through ordinary paint no matter how many coats go over it. The surface has to be cleaned thoroughly and then sealed with a primer built for masonry, or the finish will discolor within months and there is no fixing it afterward.
Mortar joints also absorb differently than the brick face does, which is why a fireplace painted without proper priming often ends up with a patchy, uneven look. Getting an even result on a textured masonry surface is a preparation problem, not a paint problem.
A working firebox leaves residue that bleeds straight through an unprimed finish.
Brick and mortar absorb at different rates. The primer is what evens that out.
What Makes an Accent Wall Work Instead of Look Random
Accent walls fail when the wall is chosen because it was empty rather than because it was important. These are the ones that consistently work.
The Wall Already in Charge
The fireplace wall, the wall behind a bed, or the first wall you see entering a room. Emphasize what the eye already goes to.
Add Texture, Not Just Color
Board and batten, shiplap, or paneling painted a single color reads far more intentional than a color change alone.
Pull From What Is There
The best accent colors come out of something already in the room, a rug, a stone hearth, a piece of art, rather than from a chip chosen in isolation.
Fireplace and Feature Wall Work Across Forsyth County
Interior focal point work throughout Cumming and the north metro.
Hayes Painting and Decorating is based at 2901 Lanier Beach South Rd in Cumming. Fireplace and accent wall projects take us across Forsyth County and into Fulton, Cherokee, Hall, Gwinnett, Dawson, and Cobb counties. The two-story great rooms common in Forsyth County homes built in the late nineties and two thousands almost always centre on a floor-to-ceiling brick or stacked stone fireplace, and lightening that single surface is regularly the change that makes the whole room feel current. Older ranch homes around Cumming and Gainesville more often have a lower, wider hearth where the mantel and surround carry most of the visual weight.

Fireplace and Accent Wall Questions
Call (770) 871-6383 if you want to talk through options before deciding.
Can you really paint a brick fireplace?
Yes, and it is one of the most requested projects we do. Brick takes paint well when it is cleaned properly and primed with a masonry primer. The result is permanent, so it is worth being sure about the color before we start, which is why we sample on the actual brick first.
Is painting brick reversible?
Honestly, no. Removing paint from brick is difficult, expensive, and rarely comes out clean. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason to make the decision deliberately rather than on a whim. We would rather you love it than hurry it.
What about a limewash or German schmear look instead?
Those are good options when you want to keep some of the brick texture and color variation showing through rather than a flat opaque finish. It is a different product and a different look, and it is worth seeing samples of both before choosing.
Can you paint the firebox and the surround?
The surround, mantel, and hearth all take standard finishing. The interior firebox needs high-heat coatings rated for the temperatures involved, which is a different product entirely and something we handle separately.
How do you pick an accent wall?
The wall that already draws the eye. Usually the one behind a bed, a fireplace wall, or the wall you see first entering a room. A wall chosen because it happens to be empty rarely reads as intentional.
Do you do shiplap, board and batten, or paneled walls?
We finish them, and we regularly work alongside a carpenter when the millwork needs to be installed first. A board and batten wall painted the same color as the trim in the room is one of the highest-impact interior changes available.
